Glorious Nap Time

Yesterday was rough. We tried putting the man down for his first nap around 10 but he woke up after only 20 minutes. We fed him, played with him and tried to put him back down but he was really interested in his mobile so we turned it on hoping he would just fall asleep watching it. He ended up watching it for about 30 minutes but he didn't fall asleep. We tried and tried and tried to get him to sleep but he just wouldn't. He was tired and extremely fussy but couldn't close the deal until 2 pm. Exhausted after the long day of screaming, Adam and I both took naps of our own.

This morning Aiden woke up at 4:30. I fed him and let him wiggle for 15 minutes and then put him back to bed. He slept until 7 and got up for more wiggle time. He had a bottle around 8 and went back down for a nap at 8:30. It's shaping up to be a better day.

Old One-Arm

Last night we tried to swaddle Aiden as usual but he wasn't having it. He would just scream and scream until we undid the swaddling or he managed to break free a bit. We tried three or four times but he just did not want to be swaddled. Dr. Karp (author of The Happiest Baby on the Block) mentions one arm swaddling as a way to wean your baby from swaddling so we decided to try it and it worked! He was perfectly happy and slept from 10pm-6am.

3 Months!

Today Aiden is 3 months old! I can hardly believe it. He's just now starting to fit into 3 month clothes (mostly due to the extra bulky cloth diapers but still).

Today I decided to start him on scheduled naps of 10:30 and 2:30. He was yawning right before I put him down but it's been 15 minutes and he's still awake. He's not crying though, just looking around and I'm sure he'll fall asleep soon.

I'm going to try to get stuff done during his nap so I'll have to cut this update short.

Uh....Gross

Today I heard a diaper explosion. When I took him for a diaper change we ended up with a HUGE mess on the changing table that necessitated an emergency load of laundry and an immediate bath. We had such a mess on our hands that I couldn't even put a clean diaper on him until I got rid of the dirty laundry. So, I put him in his crib naked and came back after the hazmat was safely in the washing machine. He decided to do some freestyle peeing while I was away so then I had wet crib linens to toss in with the hazmat.

I got him bathed and dressed in the Taggies outfit we bought at the Denver airport. Now he's happily watching his mobile.

Cooking Up a Storm

Adam and I set aside today to cook a bunch of frozen meals. This will make life easier on us because it is so hard to take care of Aiden and cook dinner when I get home from work. We are making...

  • Vegetarian Chili in the crock pot (not to freeze but to have for dinner tonight after a long day of cooking)
  • lasagna (double batch)
  • baked ziti (double batch)
  • enchiladas
  • tamale pie
  • artichoke lemon chicken penne
  • chicken and rice with black peans
That makes 22 loaf pan size casseroles! The only one that won't be in a loaf pan is the enchiladas because they always seem to disappear immediately.

More Cooing Less Barking

You may remember that Mick has been peeing in Aiden's room. We started kenneling him at night so he started peeing in there during the day. We started closing the door to his room during the day but we decided we just couldn't keep ignoring the jealous behavior. My mom has been wanting a dog and was getting pretty close to adopting one so we decided to give him up now so we can make sure he goes to a good home. So, next Friday we will drive to Pendleton to meet my mom for the swap. We will miss Mick but we know it's the right thing for our family.

Hi Ho Hi Ho

I started back to work on Tuesday and everything went smoothly. The kids were happy to see me and I had fun doing what I love. Aiden had a good day with Lorna, when I called at lunchtime he was talking to her! We're still struggling with evenings because there is just so much to do. Spring Break is next week so I'm planning to make a bunch of frozen meals to help us get through the next few weeks.

More Kindness from Strangers

We had a great time in CO. Aiden was a big star and it was really fun seeing everyone interact with him. Our return trip was somewhat stressful because of long delays but we made it home and Adam received a really nice note from a fellow passenger at the end of our trip.
Dear Daddy,

My husband and I were so impressed with the way you look so adoringly at your young son. You held him so carefully in the airport during our long delay and looked in his eyes as if you could see the world in his future. When we got on the place and he fussed a bit, Mama wrapped him just like we used to wrap each of our 4 children (snuggled up tight) then once again Daddy had him in his arms and looking in his eyes he felt safe and fell safely to sleep. What a lucky child!

It was pretty nice to get the note after a grueling day of traveling!

Out and About

I'm going back to work on March 18! I like working and I know Aiden will do well with Lorna (our sitter) but I have so much work to do before I go back. Getting out of the house by 7:15 am will be challenging but I think I've got some good shortcuts figured out. The last few days Aiden and I have been running around getting all the things we need for the big day.

The Morning Wiggle

Aiden woke up to be fed and changed at 7:10am. After his bottle he was kicking and flailing his arms like crazy so I decided he needed a morning wiggle. He's happily wiggling away on his blanket on the rug and cooing more than ever. I guess everyone needs some time alone in the morning!
